커트 보네거트가 말하는 단편 소설을 쓸 때 필요한 여덟가지 규칙

1. (글은 누군지도 모르는 사람들이 읽는다.) 알지 못하는 낯 선 사람들의 시간을 사용하는 셈이니 말이다. 글 읽는 사람이 시간이 아깝다는 생각을 하게 해서는 안된다.

2. 적어도 글에 등장하는 인물 중 하나는 글을 읽는 사람이 스스로의 흔적을 찾을 수 있도록 해야 한다.

3. 글에는 뭔가를 원하는 인간들이 나와야 한다. 단 한 잔의 물이라도 좋다.

4. 글에 등장하는 인물을 뚜렷히 밝혀나가거나, 사건을 계속 진행시키거나, 모든 문장은 이 두 역할 중에서 하나를 취해야 한다.

5. 가능하다면 말이지, 글의 마지막 부분과 유사하게 글을 시작해라.

6. 사디스트가 되라. 사랑스럽기 그지 없는 글 속의 인물이 있다해도 말이지, 얼마나 지랄맞은 일이 그들에게 일어났는지를 보여줘라. 글을 읽는 사람들이 글 속의 인물들이 왜 그렇게 사는지를 알 수 있도록 말이다.

7. 단 한 명의 '그대'를 즐거이 하는 마음으로 글을 써라. 창을 활짝 열고, 온 세상을 사랑하는 글을 쓰면 말이지, 폐렴걸린 글이 되어버린다.

8. 글을 읽는 사람들이 재빨리 가능한 한 많은 정보를 가질 수 있어야 한다. '서스펜스' 따위는 버려도 좋다. 바퀴벌레가 마지막 몇 몇 페이지를 갉아먹었다고 해도, 글을 읽는 사람들이 '어떤 일이 벌어질지, 어디일지, 왜일지' 같은 것들을 온전히 이해할 수 있어야 한다.

According to Wikipedia, these are KV’s eight commandments:

1. Use the time of a total stranger in such a way that he or she will not feel the time was wasted.
2. Give the reader at least one character he or she can root for.
3. Every character should want something, even if it is only a glass of water.
4. Every sentence must do one of two things—reveal character or advance the action.
5. Start as close to the end as possible.
6. Be a Sadist. No matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them—in order that the reader may see what they are made of.
7. Write to please just one person. If you open a window and make love to the world, so to speak, your story will get pneumonia.
8. Give your readers as much information as possible as soon as possible. To hell with suspense. Readers should have such complete understanding of what is going on, where and why, that they could finish the story themselves, should cockroaches eat the last few pages.
